The mission that still haunts my Shepard the most is Virmire. Having to leave a very good friend of hers to die in exchange for saving her lover marked her. She still has nightmares about that planet and Ashley and she wakes up uneasy and guilty.

hackett sends you on this mission telling you to go alone because it’s a delicate matter that could get the alliance into hot water
you show up and don’t bring any of your squad, hop out of the shuttle and start creeping up to the building
around the corner walks the VS survivor, who has reservations about all of this but is here for you for better or for worse
turns out hackett just didn’t want cerberus personnel in on this, but didn’t want shepard to go it alone
we can all agree that the VS would be the obvious, natural choice
then the mission proceeds much like mars did… some conversations… mistrust… working things out
idk man i will forever be bummed out that they didn’t seize this opportunity.
You know the worst part? If this had been a VS mission where Shep and the VS worked their problems out, we probably wouldn’t have had nearly as many players disgruntled about the whole Horizon thing, because there would’ve been a more satisfying resolution to the conflict. (Granted, they really shouldn’t have been disgruntled at all if they had just taken a fucking minute to try and see the situation from the VS’s point of view, but eh….)
Nah, you know the worst part? After LotSB a bunch of people got together and forged a manifesto from both sides of the Kaidan/Ashley divide. They made a bigass list of all the awesome things they would like to see, such as Hackett sending Shepard on a top secret mission with the VS so Horizon could be ironed out and we, too, could get ME2 content with our LI’s. As I recall, Bioware staff may have even joined in the on thread discussion.
